Can you guess what our news is? The blog title is an EGGcellant hint if you haven't guessed so far. Oh! I just can't stand it!!! WE GOT OUR FIRST EGG THIS MORNING!!!! I'm writing in brown in honor of the little tiny brown egg our Rhode Island Red laid. Below is a photo of Chuck holding the egg compared to our store bought eggs. Yes, the egg is small, it's supposed to be. As chickens get older their eggs get larger. As you can tell we aren't ready to sell any eggs yet that will take some time and a few older chickens. Shortly after I took this photo I fried up that egg for Chuck's breakfast, he said the $800 egg was delicious!

Here is a picture of the proud hen, the Rhode Island Red standing on top of the nesting boxes. We are pretty sure it's her as she developed faster than any of her sisters. She had her red comb and wattle a good three weeks before any of the other girls her age, in fact we were worried we might have another rooster. It could have possibly been the Wynadotte who is in the picture too but we're leaning toward the Rhodie because the Wynadotte is still working on getting all her red face & comb. The other brown egg layers are all 30 days younger and we probably won't see eggs from them until the end of September. (a reference to what we have into Coop-DeVille the birds and all their stuff)
These are the Plymouth Barred Rocks with a White Leghorn hanging out on their perches like hens do. They love their high perches.

mooooooooooooooooooom, how do the chicken dinners get up onto that bar?
Did Chuck enjoy eating your grand-chicken? :) That is awesome!
Congrats! I know that you have been patiently waiting for those eggs!
Michelle, chickens dinners (as you call them) have wings, they fly. And Yes, Chuck ejoyed eating the egg:)
I've already been out this morning and there are no new eggs. I'm sure they will come slowly at first.
They all look so grown up. No half-grown teenagers there. I like the $800 egg reference.
Looks like Coupe DeVille is coming along nicely and all that work is starting to pay off!
Tonight about 5:00 pm I checked the coop pand we had another egg. This on was in the nesting boxes, the ladies are getting the hang of this
