Which Came First? The Chicken or the Egg?

The answer to the question that all of humanity has been asking for ages..... THE CHICKEN!
We have a date!!! Chuck and I will have the first of our baby chicks on April 8. That's in 2 weeks!!! W will be busy getting a set up ready with a heat lamp because the little chicks need to be kept at 90 degrees until they start to grow. I understand they will grow fast.
As far as egg production goes we will be getting our first eggs between August 12th and September 9th, 18-22 weeks after they are hatched.
There you have it, proof that the chicken comes first.

I have been talking to my friend Scott about raising chickens and the subject of dogs came up. He told me he wops his dogs on the head with a rolled up newspaper when they show aggression or bark at his chickens. He keeps his in the barn and lets them wander the yard during the day. Mine will for the most part be in the coop.
My only dog concern in Bailey, Michelle's teacup Chihuahua, She thinks she is the big bad protector when she comes to our back yard. To complicate matters Michelle just got another Chihuahua, I don't even know her name but I'm sure she has one. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
Yes, I think we're a bit crazy but if you can't do a few crazy things in life one could be called boring. A title I never want to own.
The first batch is coming on the 8th of April. As I was ordering the lady was telling me how pretty the Golden Lace Wynadotte is and I fell for it when I saw the photo on the web and ordered two.(she is first photo) She will lay a brown egg. I also ordered two white Leghorns, the white bird. I will get 5-6 large white eggs a week from each Leghorn. Then in that batch two Rhode Island Reds will come too. From these 6 birds I should be getting between 24 and 30 eggs a week. Who knows what I will do with all the eggs, besides keeping us and Nate & Michelle in eggs, I might have a few extra to sell. Who knows, another bridge to cross when I come to it.

On Saturday we are going to plan our coop and start building it because we will probably need it by the end of April or first of May.
The next date to keep on my calendar is May 6th. That is when I will get my two Plymouth Bard Rocks and two Light Bramah's. I will post photos of the chicks and their growth it will be just like grand babies with feathers & down. No offense intended Jillian or Evelyn. Hmm...I wonder how the chicks would look in Penguin PJ's?

You think the Chihuahuas will go berserk over the chickens? I've heard of chickens getting mean and making cats and dogs run away. The two animals are really almost the same size. They probably both run about the same speed. That will be a very interesting encounter.

I LOVE THE BLOG! What pretty chickens...we had chickens when we were growing up and I remember the day we had them butchered. I think it scarred me for life because I can still see the chickens upside down in the funnel-things with their heads cut off and the blood draining...then they were plucked and put in the bathtub. What a nice little story, huh? :) Glad to find another blogger and can't wait for our 'blogging date'!

To Shaunie,
I plan on keeping the chickens in the hen house, I don't want them wandering the yard. I just hope the Chihuahuas don't upset them so they stop laying.
To LA Girl,
Sorry but I don't know who you are. I do live in a rural area but not on a farm. I live in a subdivision with neighbors on all three sides probably like you do in LA. The difference is my yard is 1/2 an acre and yours is probably 1/10 of an acre. Come visit me and you can expereince the rural life just mowing my lawn, it takes 2 hours :)

Di, you are so funny! Maybe while LA girl is here she can mow my lawn, too? I love the new background!
